2012 Sketchbook Project

The Sketchbook Project is the brainchild of the Brooklyn Art House Co-op. This is my contribution: mixed media - pencil sketches, prints, collage, laser prints, paint and pop-up...it evolved with each new page. The theme is "Life Underground".

Garden Art Chairs

I'm a little late posting these; better than never. This may be the last year for the NPCC/Sherway Garden Art Auction. This is my eighth chair for the cause (a fundraiser for Neilson Park Creative Centre). I'll miss the excitement - but not having my studio filled with three chairs from March to June!

MouseHouse

A gift made for a friend - found objects (tree bark, moss, sticks, empty snail shells and the odd bug), with a metal-tooled front and a cardboard back. It was lot of fun to forage for the makings and then put it all together.

It was fun to have my neighbour, Lisa, pose for our Friday Portrait class. She was great to paint - very focused and wearing a silk brocade dress in a colour that I had to buy a special tube of paint to finish the picture with.

Pentagonal Mask Sculpture
Made with tracing paper with a backing of parchment paper. The tracing paper gives nice crisp folds but it's flimsy so the sculpture has to be fairly small. This is about 5" high.

I like the ripped paper look. Created on Canson Mi-teint & coloured with chalk pastel.

Pentagonal Book

A couple of pages from a folding pentagonal book. Particularly effective in the sunlight. The interference paint doesn't translate so well, but it looks great on the hardcopy!

I used the limited palette for this one too but introduced blue and Alizarin crimson to keep it from becoming too warm and brown.

Limited Palette

This series of portraits - two from models and one from a photo were painted using a limited palette of Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna and Titanium White. I found some work by Joseph Jeffers Dodge in "Painting Faces and Figures" by Carole Katchen. He uses this palette to wonderful effect. You have to be careful that the lights don't go chalky but it is surprisingly versatile.

The other entry in the Member's Choice Show at NPCC, January 2009. Both of these portraits were painted in the Friday Portrait Class at NPCC - a four hour pose. This is of a friend and I was happy to get a good likeness.
